Listed below are a number of tips and pitfalls when choosing wall lights and wall fittings for your rooms.

1. These are an often ignored type of light fitting as they require thinking about either during the construction of a building or when redecoration and refurbishment is taking place.

2. It is also important to have an idea of where large pieces of furniture may be placed so that the wall light is not positioned uselessly behind the wardrobe or dresser.  Wall lights, however, can create an elegant, sophisticated or cosy, homely atmosphere, if used carefully.

3. Ensure they are not, however too close to furnishing fabrics, such as curtains as they can singe or burn if the materials get too close to hot lamps/bulbs

4. Upwards pointing wall lights are often viewed as giving an elegant feel to a room and downward pointing lights make it seem more cosy and warm

5. Shades on wall lights will both soften the lighting in a room and also reduce the amount of light available as the material or glass of a shade will soak up much of the light.  Light colored shades will help to overcome this a little

6. Clear cut glass or crystal will ensure maximum light is available but may make the lampholder part of the wall light visible unless the crystal and glass is heavily patterned

7. If the wall light you want is switched but you intend to use only a wall switch, it is possible to wire the wall light and leave it in the ON position.  The wall switch can then operate the fitting as required.  You could also disconnect the live from the switch in the fitting and hard wire it normally.  The wall switch would then operate it and the wall light switch would remain unusable.

8. If the wall light you like has no switch and you want an individual switch, it is possible to retrospectively fit a pull switch if the back-plate is large enough, but be warned it is a fiddly job and requires drilling a small hole in the back-plate.

9.  It is not an  exhaustive list and it is worth thinking through your lighting requirements and how you use your rooms before deciding on a particular style of wall lighting.
